Kick off summer at the iconic Santa Monica Pier when it hosts its first-ever “beach extravaganza” from June 23-24, a two-day event featuring 13 ocean sports competitions, sand sculptures, skate ramp, beer garden and live music.
The event is part of a “re-imagined” summer programming schedule at the Santa Monica Pier. In the new format, the wildly popular Twilight Concert Series at the pier has been pushed into the fall.
The new beach extravaganza is known as Pier 360. The name derives from the idea that when standing on the pier, in every direction there’s “an event that represents beach life and pier life,” said Negin Singh, who was recently made executive director of the Santa Monica Pier Corporation.
“There’s so much for people to do that if you showed up at 8 a.m. and stayed until 7 p.m., you would still have more stuff to do,” Singh said.
As part of Pier 360, more than 500 athletes will compete for cash prized and other awards in a variety of ocean sports. These include paddleboard races, a 1.2-mile ocean swim, skate competitions, volleyball and lifeguard drills. Registration is now open to compete in these events.
Other Pier 360 attractions are a beer and rum garden and seafood from The Albright. There will also be live performances from Aloha Spirit and Brownies and Lemonade, according to the Santa Monica Daily Press.
Pier 360 is a free event. You can find more information here.
